In December European politicians voted to strengthen company reporting rules. But in 2014 Business Minister Vince Cable is still out to weaken the Make It Better Law.

Vince wants to make sure that privately-owned companies won’t have to report on the social and environmental impacts of the products they make.

If he gets his way, Tesco would be covered by the law, but Aldi wouldn’t. Marks and Spencer would have to report on how its business affects people and the planet, but Topshop wouldn’t. All because Aldi and Topshop aren’t listed on the Stock Exchange.

That doesn’t make sense to me. As the Make It Better Law progresses through European Parliament it’s crucial that we show Vince the law should cover all large companies.

Can you take a few minutes to join me in sending Vince a message?

  1. Find an image of a product from one of the privately-owned companies listed below (or find another company if you prefer).

  2. Share your chosen product with Vince. We’ve put together some sample tweets and an email below.

Dear Mr Cable,

A strong company reporting law without loopholes is essential. The Make It Better Law should be transparent and cover all large companies. It doesn’t make business sense for Tesco to report on the environmental and social impact of its operations, but for Aldi to be let off the hook. Or Marks and Spencer to report on how its business affects people and the planet, but not Topshop or Boots.

Please support a strong law that doesn’t exclude more than 80% of large companies from having to report on the social and environmental impacts of the products they make.
