news release

Photo Opportunity: On Saturday 24th May at 4.30pm in the Peace Gardens, east of St Peter’s Square, John Leech MP, local campaigners and Manchester citizens will gather to compete in a series of ‘climate gym’ events.

On Saturday 24th May at 4:30pm in Peace Gardens, east of St Peter’s Square, John Leech MP will join hundreds of Manchester citizens in an attempt to set a record in climate change challenges.

The event, hosted by Friends of the Earth groups from across the region, will see the people of Manchester completing a series of climate change challenges including:

  • The sprint – challenge the leaders to run the fastest on climate change.
  • The pentathlon – set your own personal best by pledging to reduce your climate-changing emissions across five key areas of your life.
  • Sit-ups – get the EU to sit up and listen to the facts about climate-damaging biofuels.
  • Boxing – pack a punch as a consumer by finding out more about how to shop ethically in Manchester and pledging to do so.
  • Archery – send a message to your MP to make sure the Climate Change Bill hit the targets.

Paul Waring, campaigner with Manchester FoE said:

“Manchester is raring to go on climate change. The climate gym will see Manchester setting a record on climate change action that will challenge the Government and the rest of the UK to sit up, listen and get active.”
