Tell the government to listen to the experts and halt all fracking immediately

take action

First they hid it, now they are trying to ignore it.

The government has been trying to keep an independent report on fracking by the Committee on Climate Change a secret. But they have finally published it after more than 100,000 people demanded to see it.

It’s no wonder they were keeping it to themselves – the report warns loud and clear that fracking could stop us meeting our agreed climate targets.

But the government still wants to go all out for fracking, without evaluating the risk it poses to the UK’s carbon targets.

Friends of the Earth is already taking to court a decision to frack in Ryedale, on the grounds of climate change.

Now the government should immediately halt all fracking plans until the risks are assessed.

Sign now and ask the Secretary of State for Climate Change to stop sweeping climate change under the carpet.

The petition reads:

Dear Secretary of State for Climate Change

In the wake of the Committee on Climate Change report, which concludes that fracking risks breaching the UK’s legally-binding climate change targets, please urgently:

  • introduce an immediate halt on all fracking plans;
  • undertake a full assessment of whether it is possible to meet the CCC’s 3 tests (pdf);
  • ask the Committee to assess the compatibility of fracking with the UN Paris agreement to pursue efforts to keep global warming to 1.5 degrees.
