Friends of the Earth North West Gathering

event report

Saturday the 17th February saw several Manchester FOE members head north to Preston and the annual Friends of the Earth NW gathering. Each year the event is hosted in a different town – and with the promise of a delicious Indian curry for lunch and pub networking afterwards I was looking forward to the day.

With over 50 people gathered we started the day by sharing the great campaigning we have been up to over the past year.  Everything from straw-free action in Chester to the amazing anti-fracking work that has been happening right across Lancashire. Always inspiring to hear what others have been up to and to remind ourselves of all the things we have done as well !

Next Friends of the Earth’s major campaigns were covered with an update on the Fracking work, and Air quality campaign discussed as well as the local issue of metro mayors and devolution.

After lunch (yummy as predicted!) workshops covered campaign skills – working with the media and how to support new people in groups. And of course we finished the day with an action calling on a Frack-free UK.

Days like these are a great opportunity to hear directly from Friends of the Earth staff but perhaps more importantly to meet up with others in our area; to be inspired and share the great ideas and the woes and to feel that we are not in this alone!

The next FOE family gathering in our neck of the woods will be in Castleton, Peaks District in early June – make sure you book online!
