Fracking company applies for consent, Secretary of State should say no

news release

The government shouldn’t grant consent to Cuadrilla to frack in Lancashire while a legal case brought by Friends of the Earth is pending.

Fracking company Cuadrilla announced today that they have applied to the government for fracking consent at Preston New Road, in Lancashire.

Greg Clark, as the Secretary of State at the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy must now consider whether to grant consent for the first hydraulic fracturing in the UK since the earth tremors experienced when Cuadrilla tried to test frack in Lancashire in 2011.

Friends of the Earth are asking Minister Greg Clark to confirm that fracking consent won’t be granted while this challenge is being considered by the court. Responding to today’s announcement for fracking consent, Helen Rimmer, Friends of the Earth North West campaigner, said:

“The government’s so-called gold standard regulation is supposed to reassure everyone but we believe our legal challenge shows the opposite.

“Greg Clark should not grant fracking consent while significant questions are raised about basic regulation in the High Court. Fracking is unwanted, bad for people, the environment, and our climate, and should be stopped.”
