Because we all need to reduce our use of fossil fuels, the EU has set a target requiring member states to use at least 10% plant-based biofuels in petrol by 2020. This target will divert large amounts of land from food crops to growing plants for biofuels, increasing food prices in the process. It will also destroy forests and wildlife habitats, and studies have shown that the use of biofuels may even lead to an increase in greenhouse gas emissions.

Friends of the Earth is asking for an end to biofuels targets and investment in public transport and greater fuel efficiency, which will lead to the same reductions in emissions without making food unaffordable for the world’s poor.
