about CAN

CAN is a coalition of organisations in Greater Manchester who believe that the area needs radically better transport, including quality public transport and safe pedestrian and cycle routes.

We support the Transport Innovation Fund (TIF), the plan to invest around 3bn in improving the area's transport and to introduce a peak-time congestion charge.

We aim to highlight the wide-ranging benefits of TIF and to make sure that environmental and social issues are at the core.

For more details on the plans, please see www.gmfuturetransport.org.uk (a site by AGMA and GMPTE). CAN is a member of the YES coalition.

VOTE YES! and spread the word

Remember that we only get this huge investment if enough people vote for it. Don't be complacent, make sure you VOTE YES.

Pass on this important message to your friends, colleagues, people at the bus stop, and anyone who'll listen.

To help you do this, we've produced leaflets and posters for you to print out and display up in your communities and because we know that you need to be well informed, we've provided a fact check.

the CAN manifesto

CAN is calling on all people and organisations with an interest in or influence upon transport across Greater Manchester to work together to

make Greater Manchester a place where people can enjoy clean air in safe streets and access the services they need using sustainable forms of transport;

recognise that, with current projections in traffic growth and car ownership, Greater Manchester has no option but to revolutionise it's transport systems and funding regimes to support a significant shift away from private car use and towards more sustainable alternatives;

grasp the historic opportunity presented by the Transport Innovation Fund (TIF) bid to improve the quality of life of the people of Greater Manchester (more information at www.gmfuturetransport.com);

develop a ground-breaking integrated public transport investment plan that delivers accessible, affordable, efficient, environmentally-friendly and health-promoting transport to all residents and visitors;

through effective consultation, ensure that such a plan accommodates the concerns of Greater Manchester residents, whilst reflecting the need for radical changes to address environmental, health and economic challenges;

put low-impact measures such as a safe and comprehensive cycle path network, safe priority routes for all pedestrians and low-emission vehicle priority schemes at the heart of the integrated transport strategy whilst preserving greenspace and, in particular, not building new roads;

introduce an equitable and financially-sustainable charging mechanism that aims to reduce congestion and lower the environmental impact of the conurbation's transport.
