Climate Campaign

The Big Ask stalls

We held a number of stalls over the summer period to promote he Big Ask campaign, encouraging people to write to their MPs to ask them to support a new climate bill that will require the Government to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 3% per year:

June 4th/5th: Green Fair at the Garden of Delights
June 11th: The Big Ask Day of Action
June 26th: Beech Road Festival
July 7th: Party in the Park
July 31st: Mega Mela Festival
August 13th: Manchester Harvest

Green Fair at the Garden of Delights
Saturday 4th & Sunday 5th June

The Garden of Delights is an annual festival which sees 50,000 visitors congregate in Platt Fields Park in south Manchester to enjoy music, street theatre, art, sculpture and stalls selling plants, food and drink and crafts.

We joined the festivities with a stall as part of the Green Fair. The event was a resounding success and we collected more than 600 postcards over the two days, including two from a couple of passing trees!

The Big Ask Day of Action
Saturday 11th June

We took advantage of our stall at the Manchester Bike Week event in St. Ann's Square on 11th June to officially launch our Big Ask campaign.

We asked passers-by one simple question: "Is the Government doing enough about climate change?" The results of the survey were overwhelming - of the 547 respondents, 93% answered No, with 4% saying Don't Know, and only 3% answering Yes.

Party in the Park
Saturday 9th July

After a week off to support the Make Poverty History demo in Edinburgh, we were back in action at the Party in the Park at Seymour Park in Old Trafford.

Although the stall was a little quieter than at previous events, we got another 70 Big Ask postcards signed, the majority for local MP Beverley Hughes.

Mega Mela Festival
Sunday 31st July

The next leg of our Big Ask summer tour saw a trip to north Manchester for the Mega Mela festival, an annual celebration of Asian culture held this year in Heaton Park.

Manchester Harvest
Saturday 13th August

The Manchester Harvest event saw part of St. Ann's Square turned into a full-sized allotment to encourage people to start growing their own food.

As well as promoting the health and financial benefits of home-grown food, we also made the link to the Big Ask campaign in that local food production cuts down on food miles, a growing contributor towards climate change.

And another 150 people, plus Benny the rabbit, agreed that the Government should be doing more to tackle climate change...
