Tax Havens and Inequality – Niels Johannesen (Post-Crash Economics Society Inequality Lecture series)

Join us for the second event of our Inequality Lecture Series! Niels Johannesen (University of Copenhagen) is joining us to talk about the impact of tax havens on inequality. More details about this event, and all future events of the Series.

Niels Johannesen is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Copenhagen, where he also completed his Bachelors, Masters and PhD. He has also held positions in the Danish Ministry of Finance and was a Tax Advisor for Price Waterhouse Coopers in Luxembourg. His work is centered around taxation, transparency and inequality.

One of his most recent papers Who Owns the Wealth in Tax Havens? Macro Evidence and Implications for Global Inequality (2017) tries to estimate the magnitude of offshore wealth stored in tax havens around the world and how it can significantly change our perception of inequality. Most economic research on inequality only looks at data that the taxman has access to, whereas Nielsโ€™ research uses large troves of data to uncover how global networks of tax evasion affect levels of inequality, and explores possible policy solutions to reduce the reliance of the ultra-rich on tax havens.
