Wheel building course

Learn how to build standard three-cross bicycle wheels in our hands-on one-day course.

Delivered by fully qualified mechanic trainers this course is designed to give a good grounding using proven methods by experienced teachers.  No previous experience of bicycle maintenance necessary, this is a practical course with all equipment and materials provided including lunch!

You will use our rims, hubs and spokes as well as tools throughout the course and will learn the core skills to build a standard 32 or 36 spoke wheel using the traditional three-cross spoke pattern. These core skills can then be used to practice and build your own wheels at home. We will provide advice on the tools and parts you will need after the course to equip your home workshop and fulfil your wheel building ambitions.

Course content:

  • Naming of parts and terminology of wheel building – learn your flanges from your nipples and gain an understanding of how everything works together to create something greater than the sum of its parts
  • Learn how to calculate spoke length – how rim depth and hub dimensions impact on spoke lenght and find useful on-line resources to help do the maths
  • Lace a three cross wheel – the core skill to building a standard wheel
  • True, tension and dish a wheel – how to look after your wheels to enable years of trouble-free service
Price £110 per person
9am to 5pm, inc light lunch
