Food for the Future

news release

A ‘Food for the Future’ event is taking place on Monday 20th June from 7pm-10pm at Trafford Athletics Club in Chorlton. The event has been organised by Manchester Friends of the Earth [1], Action for Sustainable Living [2] and Fairtrade Chorlton [3], to discuss the environmental, economic and health issues surrounding food production, and promote “Real Food” which is locally sourced, organic, fairly traded and GM-free.

Guests will be treated to a Fairtrade and organic buffet, provided by Nectar café-bar in Hale and The Bean Counter in Chorlton, and a varied and entertaining programme of speakers:

· Simeon Greene MBE, relationship director with Windward Bananas, will share his experiences of how Fairtrade has helped people in his local community;
· Emily Nevins, food campaigner at Friends of the Earth, will discuss how supermarkets are profiting at the expense of farmers and the environment;
· Jessica Symons, chair of Fairtrade Chorlton Steering Committee, will talk about Chorlton’s bid to become a Fairtrade zone;
· Chris Wright, author and founder member of Action for Sustainable Living, will introduce the organisation’s work;
· Manchester Friends of the Earth will talk about taking local action with the help of the Manchester Real Food Guide. [4]

Dave Coleman, one of the event organisers from Manchester Friends of the Earth, said:

“More and more people are taking an interest in where their food comes from, with increasing concern over issues such as pesticides, GM contamination of food, child obesity, and the impact of food production and transportation on trade justice and the environment.

“This event provides an ideal opportunity to find out more about Real Food, meet people who support food production practices that are fair, humane and sustainable, and sample delicious locally sourced, organic and Fairtrade food.”

Tickets cost £9.50 each and are available from Unicorn Grocery [5] and Battery Park [6] in Chorlton. All proceeds go towards helping Manchester Friends of the Earth, Fairtrade Chorlton and Action for Sustainable Living.
