Food for the Future 2
| When? | Monday 20th June, 7pm - 10pm |
| Where? | Trafford Athletics Club, Ryebank Road, Chorlton |
| Why? | To raise awareness of real food and Fairtrade products, and to promote the group in Chorlton. |
On Monday 20th June, over 130 people gathered at the Trafford Athletics Club in Chorlton to attend the second "Food for the Future" event, organised by Manchester Friends of the Earth, Fairtrade Chorlton and Action for Sustainable Living.
Guests were welcomed to the event by the String Serenade string quartet, and quickly settled down to listen to our first two speakers. Jessica Symons, chair of the Fairtrade Chorlton Steering Group, opened proceedings by introducing the group and its aim of achieving Fairtrade zone status for Chorlton. She handed over to Emily Diamand, food campaigner from Friends of the Earth, who spoke about supermarkets and the damage they are causing to farmers, small businesses and the environment.

Guests then tucked into a delicious organic and Fairtrade buffet provided by Nectar from Hale and The Bean Counter from Chorlton. They took the opportunity to chat with our guest speakers, browse our stalls, and buy some raffle tickets before the speakers resumed.

Once everyone had eaten their fill, Chris Wright, one of the founders of Action for Sustainable Living, took the microphone to explain what fair trade means at a local level. He was followed by keynote speaker Simeon Greene MBE (above right), relationship director of Windward Bananas, who spoke passionately and eloquently about the benefits that Fairtrade has brought to his community in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Dave Coleman and Anna O'Sullivan brought the evening to a close by drawing the eagerly-awaited raffle. There were a plethora of prizes on offer, from bottles of Fairtrade wine and free meals at local eateries to a freshly-baked parsnip & pecan pie from The Bean Counter, and the star prize, a free course for two at the Centre for Alternative Technology.

Thanks to all the following for contributing to the event and/or donating prizes:
Action for Sustainable Living, The Bean Counter, Cae Gwyn Farm, The Centre for Alternative Technology, The Co-operative Group, Diamond Dogs, Eighth Day, Ethical Consumer, Fairtrade Chorlton, Gerber Foods, The Greenhouse (Rusholme), Love Saves the Day, Magic Balloons, The Magic Orange, Manchester City Council, Misty's Cafe, Nectar, Shared Earth, The Soil Association, String Serenade, Trafford Athletics Club, Unicorn Grocery.
