Chorlton Tesco Campaign

Tesco have applied to convert the Esso service station on Barlow Moor Road into a Tesco Express. This will be around three times larger than the current retail outlet and local campaigners are concerned of the impact this will have on traffic as well as the impact on vitality and viability of local shops. To learn more about the impacts of supermarkets and what you can do, visit our Real Food Guide website.

Chorlton is a unique location and one of the few areas left in Manchester where you can get all of your grocery (or as the supermarkets call it, 'convenience') shopping without stepping foot in a supermarket. But for those that do want supermarket shopping there is already a Co-op, a Morrisons and a Somerfield 'Market Fresh' to choose from. Manchester Friends of the Earth and other local campaigners ask you to say No to Tesco and Yes to Local shops.

After Unicorn Grocery organised a public meeting on the 16th of May a group of local residents, professionals, academics and business owners formed under the banner "Keep Chorlton Interesting".

Campaigners with Keep Chorlton Interesting have produced an incredible report (click here to download the full report) highlighting some of the real issues with this planning application.

The Chorlton Ward councillors and MP are all broadly supportive of the campaign but you can contact them to congratulate them on their support and ask them to speak to the planning committee on your behalf.
