Act Local, Go Global!
News of Manchester Friends of the Earth's supermarket campaigns have reached as far as South Korea.
Journalists from that country have visited the UK to meet supermarket campaigners as the Korean population increasingly sees a link between an influx of big businesses and a dearth of small, locally owned businesses.
In their words:
"As large malls are increased in the old towns in Korea, the existing small shops and commercial power are being decreased, which leads to social conflicts."
Maybe the motto "Think Global, Act Local" should be changed to "Local Action, Global Impact". Let's hope that lessons learnt by UK campaigners can benefit Korea as well as Britain.
Food campaigner Paul D'Ambra said:
"It was interesting to see that the same problems are being experienced in Korea. Supermarkets clearly aren't just a local problem so it was great to be able to give the Korean journalists arguments based on our real-world experiences"
