Tesco Campaign
The past few years have seen Tesco submit a number of planning applications for totally unnecessary and unsuitable supermarkets in the Manchester area. We found about the Burnage supermarket too late to stop it getting the go-ahead, but took the opportunity to monitor the impact of the new store on local shops in the area.
After a year
our Burnage Survey has shown that local
businesses are struggling to survive: read
Manchester Friends of the Earth first annual report on the impacts.
Armed with this evidence of the detrimental effect of supermarkets on small, independent businesses, we took on Tesco when they submitted an application for an enormous new supermarket in Trafford... and won!
Trafford
Tesco rejected - the inspector found against Tesco and mentioned
our Burnage Survey in his findings.
More recently, we have been working with campaigners in Chorlton to fight off the threat of a Tesco Express on the site of the Esso Garage near Unicorn.

And all this campaigning has not gone unnoticed - we were recently approached by some journalists from Korea who wanted to find out more about our campaigns...
