On Thursday 4th May, the people of Greater Manchester will have a historic opportunity to vote for our region’s first elected Mayor.

The new Mayor will hold powers over the devolved budget for health and social care, skills, housing, transport and criminal justice. They will also have a leadership role within the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) and, together with the 10 local council leaders, will face urgent social and environmental challenges in the coming years.

Ask the candidates to prioritise people and planet

These challenges include the provision of affordable housing, protecting green spaces, dealing with traffic congestion, tackling ill health and rising obesity levels, powering our homes and businesses, cleaning up our polluted air and radically reducing carbon emissions.

The power is in our hands to influence the new Mayor’s priorities, and Manchester Friends of the Earth has launched a series of 12 key actions we want the new Mayor to take for a greener, cleaner, healthier region.

Call on the candidates to support our asks

We have asked each candidate which of these ‘asks’ they will commit to do if they’re elected, and we will publish their responses on our website so that people can see which candidates best represent their concerns on these important social, economic and environmental issues.

Please take the email action now and ask your future mayor to pledge their support for these key actions.  With your support we can change Greater Manchester’s future, for the better.
