Cycle Storage

We attended a community event in Old Trafford recently to discuss with residents their thoughts on better cycle storage. And we had widespread interest! In London many local authorities have introduced on -street secure cycle storage (a cycle hoop or similar) for those who live in flats and terraced housing.  Obviously when storage of a bike at home is difficult; this presents a barrier to cycling for many people. See the  #ThisIsAwkward campaign for examples :)Across Greater Manchester only a few of these systems have been installed (in Salford) and we think there should be wider adoption.
We plan to put together an online action that residents can use to request for cycle storage from their Local Council. Please get in touch if you would like to help out with this campaign.

Clean Air

The GM Clean Air plan

GM has put forward a new clean air plan which is currently being reviewed by the Department of Transport. Approval is not expected until September. In the meantime we will be: -putting together ideas on what action we think is needed to clean up the air in Greater Manchester, -updating the website with details of the current situation and what we feel needs to happen next.  -writing a statement calling for action on air pollution in GM and asking supportive organisations to co-sign this.
If you would like to be part of this please get in touch.

School Streets

Across Greater Manchester there are plans to roll out School Streets to improve the air quality during the school run by restricting polluting traffic around schools during drop-off and pick- up times – and encouraging cycling, and walking. Despite this being a great idea and a plan to have at least 50 up and running by now- Greater Manchester as implemented a grand total of zero permanent school streets. There are several campaigns promoting school streets including Mums for Lungs and we will be writing to local authorities to ask about their plans.

Zero-emission mobility

While addressing our polluted air we also need to make sure that the solutions are zero or low carbon too. Clean Cities Campaign – they recently carried out a review of 36 cities across Europe to see whether they’re on the right track to reach zero-emission mobility by 2030. Manchester scored a D and was ranked 30th πŸ™ See their report for more details.

Road Building

Save Rimrose Valley

Save Rimrose Valley Campaign – is a community campaign fighting to preserve the Rimrose Valley in Liverpool and prevent an A Road being built through the middle of it. As part of this fight campaigners will be travelling to Manchester on Friday 26th August to hand in letters of objection to Highways England. If you would like to support this campaign – see eventbrite page for timings for meeting up etc.

Greater Manchester Road Building

There is an opportunity to influence road building in GM when we take part the Places for Everyone Examination in Public event later this year. If you would like to find out more about this process and help us plan our response please join our meeting on Wednesday 10th August at 7pm.

National Road Building Strategy consultation

The Government is consulting on its road building strategy and how this can be delivered with sustainable development in mind. We will be discussing this further at our next meeting. If you would like to read more about these issues please see Transport for the North’s strategywhich contrasts dramatically with the current Welsh approach
