Let’s give Manchester’s bees a helping hand!

take action

Let’s make Manchester a City of Bees!

Many of us will have heard of—or even taken part in—City of Trees, the drive to plant three million trees across Greater Manchester over the next 25 years.

However, the local bees (and also butterflies) need something a little more ‘down to earth’ to keep them well-fed and in good shape for pollinating our fruit trees and vegetable patches. The good news is that we already have the perfect answer!

If you’ve been to Alexandra Park or past the Mancunian Way over the last couple of summers, you’ve probably seen hundreds of wild flowers where there used to be nothing but bare grass—turning an unappetising ‘green desert’ into a banquet for bees and butterflies.

At Manchester Friends of the Earth, we can help you have an urban meadow of your own!

If you have a patch of ground you’d like to see transformed into a wild flower garden, we will be able to supply you with tools, equipment, signage and the all-important seed mix—and maybe some of our own volunteers to help out with the digging and sowing on the day. This is all thanks to a kind donation left us by local environmental charity Action for Sustainable Living.

Ideally, we’d like an area of 20 square metres to get the best results, but it won’t be a problem if you can’t spare that much. You’ll also need to make sure the public have access to the area.

Contact us

If you’d like to join in (or if you have any questions) please contact us at damian@manchesterfoe.org.uk no later than Saturday 15 April with details of the site you have in mind.

We’ll be in touch to arrange a suitable date for the digging/sowing session (probably in May) and get the seed ordered. The seed mix is guaranteed to produce results on poor soil. We can assure you that ground full of rubble has given a bumper crop of corn marigolds and wild poppies within a few months!

Don’t forget to pass the word on to anyone you know who might be interested, as we wouldn’t like anyone to miss out…

Hope to hear from you soon!

Best regards,

Damian
