Anniversary Report - behaviour of car drivers

We received 47 comments about the behaviour of other road users. Problem behaviours included cars driving in cycle lanes or swerving into them suddenly; drivers not leaving enough room for bicycles when overtaking; vehicles pulling into cycle lanes or not paying attention when entering a carriageway from the left; and drivers who are simply too aggressive.

  • Chichester Road - Crossroads between Chichester Road and Moss Lane West (South bound, turning right into Moss Lane West) Cars ignore the cycle space in front of their stop line; cars go very fast into the bike lane to avoid right turning traffic even when cyclists are there - I've nearly been hit several times whilst waiting to go into the middle of the road to turn right.

  • The roads around the Trafford Centre - (). As it's surrounded by motorway it was never going to be easy to get around the trafford centre and I think the sign near the Barton Road junction advises you to get off and walk. You need to grab all the second lane and hope that somebody from the inside lane hasn't screwed up and wants to suddenly avoid the motorway. Improve: Driver attitute is the main problem here.

  • Oxford Road - Between Rusholme and the University (Both ways). Its nice going through whitworth park now especially with the new surface. Only problem is that pedestrians seem to be unaware this is a cycle path, it get worse when your going past the shops. Also the van for the flower shop next to big hands seems to be always parked blocking the exit on to the road.

  • Considerate drivers not driving in cycle lanes

  • Fewer cars squeezing in the cycle lane

  • A56 queuing traffic not blocking cycle lane on bridge over mersey

  • Cars keeping in their lanes and respecting cycle lanes. Pedestrians looking out for bikes when walking round the St. Peter's Square cycling paths

  • LESS AGGRESSIVE DRIVING

  • On manchester road lots of cars drive in the cycle lanes between pendelbury and the A6 this is especially bad at the approach to agecroft road junction (in both directions) where cars will run onto the cycle lane to undertake the busy traffic quite often cutting cyclists up. Also heading towards manchester the approach to the roundabout at the a6 the cycle lane always has a long tailback of cars on it including the roundabout entrance (where the cycle lane has a solid white line) The Traffic lights at broad street and frederick road are very dangerous, pulling away from there going into manchester cyclists and cars have to switch lanes (as cyclists have to swap one lane to the right to go straight on and cars want to take the left lane onto albion way) Buses have the same problem but car drivers will give way to buses more often. Most of the problems I encounter on my regular route are due to drivers being inconsiderate rather than cycle provision or lack of it - one regular problem tho is when a road is *just* wide enough for 2 lanes of traffic i.e. 2 lanes of very slow moving cars and no room for cycles to get passed and then no room for cars to safely overtake once traffic starts to move more quickly. traffic calming measures should be more bike friendly ie speed bumps staring further from the curb or maybe have a 6" groove in them about 2 feet from the curb. Chicane style obstacles that dont have a cycle run through are very dangerous and should not be used.

  • drivers paying attention especially when exiting from the left

  • Other road users leaving more space

  • More considerate drivers (look out for cyclists)

  • Drivers not pulling halfway out of junctions blocking cycle lanes.

  • People in cars not getting so close

  • More room from motorists

  • More care by (mainly) mothers dropping children off at schools along the route

  • courteous drivers

  • Courteous and understanding car drivers.

  • More considerate car drivers

  • less cars, or more considerate drivers

  • greater awareness of cyclist from pedestrains and motor vehicles

  • improved road manners and general awareness from motorist (especially bus and taxi drivers)

  • Drivers who knew how to indicate

  • Less idiots in cars ignoring cycle/bus lanes

  • Less cars trying to run you down (ussually happens if I set of later)

  • drivers leaving cycle lanes clear, drivers using the correct lanes at turnings

  • Drivers who obey Highway code

  • better driving by motorists

  • being run over less

  • Driver education

  • Car drivers being more considerate and not driving so stupidly or close to your bike

  • better drivers

  • As always, better driver awareness!

  • less manic car drivers

  • Car drivers being more cyclist-orientated.

  • Drivers giving me more room

  • Cycle lanes that are respected by car drivers

  • abusive/careless drivers

  • A safe route away from cars, many of which appear to be driven by psycopathic nutters.

  • car drivers totally ignore them, driving straight into them as though they weren't there, and obstrcuting them whilst waiting for traffic lights to change. (Particulary a problem for me at the traffic lights in the center of Urmston.. heading from the flixton direction, cars make two car lanes, where the road markings only indicate one car lane and one cycle lane, the effect being the second lane of cars blocks the cycle lane, and prevents cyclists reaching the ASL. And if you do reach the ASL, you usually find a car filling it. This happens almost every other day on my commute.

  • I am put off by drivers driving too fast or close to cyclists and drivers parking on cycle lanes. More dual pedestian/cyclist pavements would make me feel much safer.

  • There are cycle routes fo rmost of my journey. However, the one place there isnt is in rusholme. Which, particularly after 5pm is so busy, badly policed and full of people parking and driving dangerously. I have been almost crushed between cars and busses who dont pay full attention on more than one occcasion.

  • To get to my work I have to travel down the Wilmslow/Oxford Road corridor, and it simply isn't safe. Car divers are reckless, and the bus drivers are notoriously poor. I'm not willing to risk my life to cycle to work!

  • Last year I planned to cycle to work, but found (after nearly being knocked off my bike) cars and lorries showed a total disregard for cyclists. This was a very scary experience and I decided that dicing with death was not a good way to start or finish my working day.

  • bike paths, less manic drivers

  • the main problem is careless drivers, in the past i have nearly been taken of my bike a few times due to people not paying attention. it just doies not feel safe at times. pollution as well
