Say No to Heathrow expansion

Heathrow Airport contributes a third of the UK's aviation emissions. Yet the Government's aviation expansion plans include building a third runway at Heathrow, which will result in a 70% increase in passengers by 2030. This will make the UK's targets on climate change virtually impossible to meet.

Fly less

Choose to fly less frequently whether for business or pleasure. It's simple, but effective: take a train as an alternative to the particularly inefficient domestic or short haul flights (check out www.seat61.com for info about rail travel to Europe); investigate teleconferencing as an alternative to business flights; support the domestic tourist industry and plan more holidays in the UK.

Fly carbon neutral

If you do decide to fly after all, there are a number of carbon offset schemes that can calculate the emissions of any airline flight in the world, and offset them by planting trees that reabsorb carbon dioxide (CO2) or by investing in projects that cut down CO2 emissions (though read this press release first).

Alternatively, why not offset your emissions by helping us campaign for a more sustainable future? Find out more about joining Manchester Friends of the Earth on our membership page...
