Double Trouble for 4x4 Drivers

When? Saturday 12th March 2005
Where? Manchester City Centre
Why? To educate people about the environmental and social damage caused by the increasing numbers of urban 4x4s, and gauge public backing for a proposal to double parking charges for 4x4s.

On Saturday 12th March, members of the Alliance Against Urban 4x4s took to the streets of Manchester for a second time after our successful ticketing action before Christmas.

This time, as well as issuing some more mock parking tickets to 4x4s parked around the city centre, we also performed a survey, asking the public the question "Should parking charges be doubled for 4x4s and other very polluting vehicles?"

The results of the survey were clear, with 84% voting "Yes" and only 16% voting "No". We now want to present these results to the council and ask them to follow the example of North Sydney council in Australia and double parking charges for 4x4s and other gas-guzzlers.
