Handover of 4x4 Survey Results

In March, members of the Alliance Against Urban 4x4s did a survey in the city centre asking the people of Manchester whether they thought parking charges in the city should be doubled for 4x4s and other very polluting vehicles, and an emphatic 83% voted in favour of the proposal.
On Wednesday 22nd June, we presented the results of the survey to Councillor Neil Swannick, Executive Member for Planning and the Environment, on the steps of Manchester Town Hall, and urged the council to:
1. Double the cost of parking a defined list of large polluting vehicles within Manchester City Centre to discourage their use;
2. Seek and introduce other measures to limit the number of large polluting vehicles travelling into the city centre;
3. Introduce positive concessions (e.g. reduced parking costs or dedicated parking areas in the most central areas) to users of small environmentally neutral (low or zero-CO2 emission) vehicles within the city centre area.
Cllr. Swannick responded:
"People are becoming increasingly aware of the effects of carbon emissions in creating climate change. The Government now encourages car users to buy cars which produce low carbon emissions by reducing car tax.
"In Manchester we are aiming to reduce carbon emissions at a rate exceeding UK Kyoto targets as part of our goal of becoming the UK's Greenest City.
"I am not sure we can implement what Friends of the Earth are asking us to do, but I welcome their work on highlighting this important issue and suggest to the owners of these 'gas guzzlers' that they consider switching to a more environmentally responsible form of transport."
