4x4 Mudwash

When? Saturday 16th July 2005
Where? Deansgate, central Manchester
Why? To give urban 4x4 drivers the chance to give their vehicles the genuine off-road look, and ask passers-by to sign our petition to Alistair Darling...

On Saturday 16th July, campaigners from the Alliance Against Urban 4x4s set up an impromptu mudwash in central Manchester.

Armed with sponges and buckets of mud, we approached 4x4 drivers as they stopped at the lights at the junction of Deansgate and St. Ann Street, and asked them if they'd like a mudwash to give their 4x4s the genuine off-road look.

For some reason, none of the passing 4x4 drivers actually took us up on our offer, although Alliance members at some of the other mudwashes taking place around the country did persuade a couple of drivers to treat their 4x4s to a splash of mud!

As well as providing a mudwash, we also asked passers-by to sign our petition to Secretary of State for Transport, Alistair Darling, urging him to:

  • Reform road tax so that big 4x4s pay more;
  • Create exclusion zones for 4x4s in urban areas;
  • Ban 4x4 adverts in the mainstream media on the grounds of public health.

And, as numerous surveys have shown (including our own in March), the majority of the public agree that 4x4s have no place in an urban environment, and more than 350 people signed our petition on the day.
