In Town Without My Car Day 2003
Following our success with the organisation of our own European Car Free Day event in 2001, we have continued to promote and support car-free events in Greater Manchester.
This year we were involved on Manchester City Council's planning group for the event. Although we were not happy with Manchester Airport sponsoring the event, we were able to use our influence to minimise the extent to whichit was promoted as part of the day.
We attended two events: a market day on a closed-off Deansgate on Sunday 21st September and a smaller event at lunchtime on the Monday. Full accounts of these events are in the November 2003 issue of our newsletter, Green Matters.

The Market on Deansgate on Sunday 21st - in the sunshine.

A smaller event on Monday 22nd - rained off.
In Town Without My Car Day 2002
We focused our campaigning efforts this year on encouraging Local Authorities in Greater Manchester to mark the day themselves.
We attended two inspiring events: Stockport on Saturday 21st September, and Manchester on Sunday 22nd. For more information about these, including photos, please see our Autumn 2002 campaigns newsletter.
Key elements of our campaign were:
- Writing to all Local Authorities in Greater Manchester to tell them about our event and to encourage them to follow our example.
- A forthcoming press event to showcase the plans of Local Authorities.
- Making a presentation at a seminar on 9th April in Stoke-on-Trent to Local Authorities officers.
- Publishing press releases about the plans of Local Authorities in Greater Manchester in the run up to the event.
