Love Your Bike!
Manchester
Friends of the Earth launched a high profile campaign called 'Love
Your Bike' on Tuesday 21st March 2006 to promote cycling in Manchester.
There were billboards and back of bus adverts carrying the message
that cycling to work is quicker, saves money and keeps you fit. As
part of the launch there was a photo shoot at 8am on 21st March on
the Chester Road / Mancunian Way roundabout - see below for photos.
We got good media coverage for this campaign as a whole and for this photo shoot / press call in particular. The campaign will promote cycling in a positive way and hopefully build a platform for future campaigning by demonstrating the potential for more cycling in Manchester but also questioning the existing facilities in the city.
Please email us if you want any further information.
What is the campaign?
· prominent advertising on billboards and bus backs, targeted on routes going into the city centre - this ran for four weeks, starting in mid March 2006;
· written materials, in the form of postcards, carrying the same messages as the billboards and distributed more widely;
· a website (www.loveyourbike.org) with detailed information about the what, why, where and how of cycling in Manchester, all presented within the fun theme of 'Love Your Bike' - including an opportunity to feed back on experiences of trying cycling in Manchester, therefore offering the opportunity to identify areas in need of improvement;
· media work that seeks to make sure that the messages of LYB continue to be widely and positively discussed in written and broadcast media;
· a discount scheme run with local bike shops, cafes and restaurants and running for 2 months from the start of the campaign
· making the most of potential links with other campaigns and activities - including Greater Manchester Cycling Campaign and National Bike Week - to make sure that a range of activities, such as bike rides, complement the awareness raising work.
