Manchester Friends of the Earth held a waste day of action in St Ann’s Square on Saturday 5th June. The aim of the day was to gain public support for the campaign to improve the doorstep recycling service in the Manchester area.

Friends of the Earth had composed a letter, addressed to the city council, which requested improvements to the service currently available. Group members were then asking members of the public to sign the letters and stick them onto recyclable containers. The letters will then be presented to the council, outlining what improvements the public want to see.

2004-06-05_DoorstepRecycling04Due to recent improvements in the scheme some people were happy with the service offered, but all were interested in further improvements, particularly requests for recycling plastic bottles in addition to paper, can and glass recycling. Many residents don’t yet have, or are not aware of, any doorstep recycling facilities. Some residents living in flats complained that they don’t have recycling facilities but would use the facility if it was available.

Volunteers gained good public support on the day and will continue with the campaign, obtaining more signatures from the public, before presenting the ‘message in a bottle’ to the City Council.
