The Big Ask in Bolton

The Big Ask in Bolton

20th October 2007

By Saturday 20th October, the polar bear had moved on to Bolton, and campaigners from Manchester and Bolton Friends of the Earth tracked him down outside Marks & Spencers on Deansgate.

He was met there by local MP, Brian Iddon, who expressed his appreciation for the work that Friends of the Earth is doing to raise awareness of climate change and push for a strong Climate Change Bill, though he was unwilling to pledge support for our three key asks (see below) at this stage.

Over 100 shoppers and a photographer from the Bolton News stopped to sign postcards on the day, and we will hope to persuade Dr Iddon to listen to his constituents and do the right thing when the Bill comes to a vote.

The Bill will soon be debated in Parliament, and we are asking for three key amendments to ensure that the UK does its fair share to avoid dangerous climate change – the Bill must:

set a long-term emission reduction target in line with the latest science of at least 80 per cent by 2050;

count emissions from all sources, including international aviation and shipping;

include annual targets so politicians can’t blame previous Governments for missed targets.
