MPs swarm to hear about saving Britain’s bees

Together you convinced over 100 MPs to go and hear about the threat facing some of our iconic bee species. Thanks to everyone who emailed their MP and helped create one of the best-attended Westminster events we’ve ever held.

Bee Teas event 16th May 2013 ParliamentOver 100 MPs attended the Friends of the Earth’s ‘Bees Tea’ on Thursday 16th May – an event about bee decline. Held in Parliament, Bees Tea was so popular that MPs were queuing to get into the packed room. Cuddly human-sized bees and a special bee cake also made an appearance. But there was a serious point.

MPs heard from leading experts about bee decline, its causes and solutions. Andthey were asked to take the urgent action needed to help save them.

Speakers included:

  • The event’s hosts – George Eustice MP (Conservative), Roger Williams MP (Liberal Democrat) and Alan Whitehead MP (Labour)
  • Caroline Lucas MP, Green Party
  • Lynn Dicks, Knowledge Exchange Fellow, University of Cambridge
  • Quentin Clark, Head of Sustainability and Ethical Sourcing, Waitrose
  • Caryn Le Roux, Biodiversity Advisor to the Welsh Government

Friends of the Earth’s Head of Campaigns Andrew Pendleton said:

“It’s fantastic to see that so many MPs care about bees, but it’s not enough just to come to an event.  MPs heard today about the urgent action needed from them to save our vital pollinators. The Government should introduce a Bee Action Plan to tackle all major causes of bee decline with the support of MPs of all parties.”
