Love Your Bike campaign welcomes Government cycle funding announcement

Love Your Bike welcomes the Government’s announcement today that Manchester will be one of eight English cities sharing £77 million investment to increase cycling levels by improving cycling infrastructure.

Greater Manchester will receive £20 million and the Combined Authority will be contributing £11.1million. The funding will kickstart Velocity 2025, which will create a city-wide cycle network consisting of ‘spokes’ leading out from the city centre to the M60 and offering opportunities to connect with public transport services.  The funding promises to deliver 56km of new or improved cycle paths, and the proposals also include the creation of 20 mph zones in some residental areas. The Velocity 2025 ambition is to achieve a doubling in the number of cycle journeys within 5 years and double them again by 2025.

Creating a safe cycling network will help encourage more people to cycle which will help reduce CO2 emissions, improve people’s health and boost the economy.

Love Your Bike hopes that the successful Cycling City Ambition Grant bid will bring a step change in Greater Manchester’s commitment to increasing cycling levels across the conurbation.   We look forward to working with Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), the ten local authorities and businesses across Greater Manchester to make the Manchester City region one of the best cycling cities.
