Upcycled fashion show returns to Manchester

15th November 2013

Recycle for Greater Manchester’s award winning upcycled fashion show returns to Manchester on the evening of the 20th November at MOSI (Museum of Science & Industry).

Fashion or RubbishThe event will showcase upcycled designer collections, including top designer Adnan Bayyat’s latest dress ‘attachment’ who has previously designed for Lady Gaga and is renowned for his avant-garde approach to design and versatility. Other clients include Sainsbury’s, the BBC and Manchester Pride.

Press, media and bloggers are invited to meet the fashion designers and stall holders at 6pm and then have the opportunity for front row tickets to the catwalk for the best view of the upcycled fashion show.  It’s a date for the winter fashion diary! Have a look at last year’s fashion show in our fashion gallery, which was also a sell-out!

#FashionorRubbish is right on trend as the show sold out within 5 days of tickets being released, making it the must see alternative fashion show in the North West. Hundreds of attendees will get the chance to be inspired by ethical fashion on the catwalk.

Designers and stall holders on the night include Adnan Bayyat, Dress for Success, Zolibeau, Junk Shop, From Somewhere, Rubbish Revamped, Goodone, MIA, Stitched up, TRAIDRemade, Sara Han, Tameside College, Emmaus.

There is plenty of opportunity for attendees to purchase upcycled fashion, homeware and accessories on the evening such as coats, shoes, dresses, handbags, necklaces and bespoke furniture.

The stage will be alive with unique and extraordinary upcycled collections that were previously a variety of different outfits; what started off as a shirt might return as a skirt! Waste has never been so fashionable….

The charity, Dress for Success,  will be  accepting clothing donations on the night, so attendees are being encouraged to bring along items of clothes they no longer want.

Clothing does not have to be formal, as long as the items are clean and of good quality. You can also bring shoes, bags and accessories that you no longer use.

Commenting on the show, Sheridan Hilton, Waste Prevention Manager at Recycle for Greater Manchester said: “This is the third year of the upcycled fashion show and we are partnering with a range of fantastic and diverse organisations to inspire and encourage residents in Greater Manchester to upcycle and make the most of their clothes.”

He added, “Greater Manchester currently buys 90,000 tonnes of new clothes each year and throws away 59,000 tonnes to make room for these new purchases, most of which could be used again. Upcycled fashion is definitely something we are getting excited about in Greater Manchester; it’s not just about looking good, but saving money and reducing waste.”

Dress for Success, who will have a collection and a stall at the event is an international not-for-profit organisation that promotes the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life.

Anna-Louise Gilhooley, founder of Charity Dress for Success Manchester said: “Our charity relies on kind donations of work wear from professional women who want to help others succeed. We are passionate about getting women back into work and on the road to independence, and the gift of a quality interview outfit goes a long way to making this happen. The Dress for Success stylists thrive on giving quality ‘pre-loved’ clothing a new life, and women a new start”

Free food and drink is available on the night.
