Govt’s future flood insurance plan excludes consideration of climate change

news release

Following the worst tidal surges in the UK for 60 years, Friends of the Earth Climate Campaigner Guy Shrubsole today (Friday 6 December 2013) said: “Following the devastating damage caused by the biggest storm surge across the East Coast in the past 60 years, it’s unforgivable that the Government’s future flood insurance plan excludes consideration of climate change.

“Its own figures show that global warming will put tens of thousands more British homes at risk of flooding in future – yet Ministers’ policies fail to reflect this.

“The Environment Secretary must stop playing Russian roulette with people’s homes and livelihoods through his cavalier approach to flood risk.

“It’s the duty of our politicians to ensure fair and lasting protection for British households from the threat of even worse flooding in future.”
