Cabinet flooding row shows Govt out of its depth on crisis

news release

Responding to reports today (Monday 10 February 2014) of Cabinet rows over the handling of the flooding crisis, Friends of the Earth climate campaigner Guy Shrubsole said: “Ministers have been desperately trying to blame anyone and anything for the flooding crisis – from bird sanctuaries to the EU.

“The Government is clearly out of its depth and not prepared to face up to a mess of its own creation.

“Flood defence spending has been slashed, frontline staff at the Environment Agency have been cut and our ability to cope with the consequences of climate change has been steadily dismantled.

“The Prime Minister must focus his Cabinet on the crucial job of saving people’s properties, businesses and livelihoods. And then, when the floods abate, Mr Cameron must put in place a long-term action plan that protects us all from the threats posed by a changing climate.”
