Govt fuel poverty strategy is too little too late

news release

Responding to the release of the Government’s fuel poverty strategy consultation today (Wednesday 22 July 2014), Friends of the Earth Fuel Poverty Campaigner Sophie Neuburg, said: Once again the Government is failing those struggling to pay their fuel bills – their promise to bring fuel poor homes up to reasonable energy efficiency levels by 2030 is too little, too late.

“The caveat only to do what is ‘reasonably practicable’ makes the pledge meaningless.

“There must be a firm Government commitment to bring all low income homes up to high energy efficiency standards, with no get-out clauses.”

Responding to the release of a consultation on energy efficiency standards in the private rented sector, Sophie Neuburg said:

“The consultation on the private rented sector energy efficiency standards is long overdue – the regulations as proposed will be weak, and impossible to enforce.

“By stating that standards only have to be reached at no upfront cost, the Government is showing that it is on the side of the landlords, not those living in freezing cold rented homes.”
