MPs’ call to end throwaway society welcomed

news release

Responding to the Environmental Audit Committee’s Circular Economy report published today (Thursday 24 July 2014), Friends of the Earth Resource Use Campaigner Julian Kirby said:
“Thanks to greedy companies and short-sighted 1970’s economists we live in a throwaway society we cannot sustain.

“This welcome report shows a different world is within our reach, where better product design, smarter government and responsible business combine to ensure that our economy and environment can thrive together.

“With the enormous energy, water and land cost of producing food, particularly meat and dairy products, the committee is absolutely right to propose a ban on food waste to landfill – although incineration should also be banned.

“The UK is the most import-dependent economy in Europe – in addition to the excellent suggestions in this report, ministers must help companies measure and reduce the natural resources required to sustain their business.”
