End subsidised forest destruction

6th November 2014

Overseas forest are being cut down to feed Britain’s power stations. Wood from US forests is being shipped to the UK to be burnt in biomass plants. And our Government is handing out generous subsidises to energy companies who do this, claiming it is “green energy”.

Which seems odd, considering the Government’s own figures show that burning trees for electricity can be dirtier than coal.

Bioenergy can be a green energy solution. But we need the Government to support the right kind of bioenergy.

Using locally-sourced wood residues from sawmills to heat houses, for example, can have real environmental benefits.

Tell the Minister for Energy to stop subsidising forms of bioenergy that are dirtier than coal.
