Support community energy in Greater Manchester

take action

Inspired by Friends of the Earth’s Run on Sun campaign, a group of volunteers came together last year to found Greater Manchester Community Renewables (GMCR), with the aim of starting a community energy revolution in the home of the industrial revolution.

Help our schools go solar

GMCR is planning to install solar panels on two primary schools – Primrose Hill in Ordsall and Irlam Primary – and The Fuse, a community hub in Partington.

GMCR is also working with Moss Community Energy, which was formed after the Barton Moss protests to develop a positive alternative to fracking, to install solar panels on Fiddlers Lane Primary School in Irlam

Having solar panels will help GMCR’s partners save money on their bills, reduce carbon emissions and inspire children (and grown-ups!) to learn about energy and climate change – and surpluses will go towards a Community Fund to support eco-friendly projects in the local area.

It is estimated that this community energy scheme will generate over 100,000 kWh of clean, green electricity in the first year alone, saving approximately 50 tonnes of carbon dioxide.  Over the life of the project, this will produce combined energy bill savings of just under £50,000 and a Community Fund of over £60,000.

Invest in a Brighter Future v4

GMCR has launched a community share offer to raise £186,000 to fund the installation of the solar panels at the four sites it has partnered with.  The minimum investment is just £100, and everyone who buys shares becomes a member of the society and can help decide how any surpluses are used.

The share offer is a unique opportunity for residents and businesses to make an investment that will have a positive impact on their local community and the environment, while also receiving a modest return.

If you’d like to find out more about investing in the project, visit the GMCR website or their Crowdfunder page.

You can also help GMCR to meet their fundraising target by following them on Facebook and Twitter and spreading the word about the project to your friends and colleagues.
