Job advert: are you a Planner? In Manchester/Leeds? Help fight #fracking & support communities

We are looking for an enthusiastic and committed Planner who can provide planning advice and services for Friends of the Earth’s campaigns and for communities that Friends of the Earth is working with at a grassroots level.

The main aim of the role is to build capacity for change at local level using the planning system – in particular by supporting communities to affect the outcomes of planning decisions, and to influence the environmental considerations that are taken into account in the planning process.

This role will be focussed on our fossil free work against fracking and coal extraction initially.

Main Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver creative and inspirational planning training programmes for communities campaigning against local fossil fuel extraction to help them understand and use the planning system.
  • Develop and support community networks to share planning skills and experience.
  • Respond to strategically important planning consultations and applications in relation to fossil fuel extraction.
  • Develop land use planning tactics and policies for Friends of the Earth’s campaigns.
  • Make tactical and strategic planning recommendations in relation to case work.

Key Skills and Attributes

Essential:

We are looking for a planner who:

  • Has a planning qualification or equivalent planning experience.
  • Has a broad understanding of the planning system and its processes including knowledge of relevant planning legislation e.g. NPPF, Town and Country Planning Acts
  • Is a self-starter, and is skilled at managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Has excellent inter-personal skills including being able to work with a range of people from different demographic and professional backgrounds.
  • Has excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • A commitment to the aims and values of Friends of the Earth.
  • You will need to able to travel and work flexibly.

Desirable:

We are also looking for someone with:

  • Experience of supporting communities on local campaigns
  • Experience of drafting land use planning policies and responding to plans or participating in examinations.
  • Experience of designing and delivering training in a creative, well-informed and effective way to achieve positive outcomes.
  • Experience of campaigning

Experience of working with communities directly affected by planning decisions

About the Team

The planning team consists of a Senior Planner and Planner. It sits within the Rapid Response (political, legal and planning) Unit at the heart of Friends of the Earth’s fast-paced campaigns.

Working to the Senior Planner, you will work closely with our priority campaign teams, our regional campaigners across England, and our network of local groups.

Your work will focus on our fossil free campaigning initially – particularly supporting local communities to use the planning system to oppose fracking and coal. You may also work on urban nature, air quality, and renewable energy as the role develops.

Salary: 27,430 per annum

Location: Manchester/Leeds
Hours/days per week: 4/5 days a week
Contract: Permanent
