Government consultation on coal phase-out welcomed
Reacting to the government consultation published today on the phase-out of coal, Friends of the Earth climate campaigner Guy Shrubsole said:
“Coal is a dirty, inefficient and climate-wrecking fuel that belongs in the past. The government’s move to consult on its commitment to phase out coal is a good, positive development.
“If we don’t burn coal, we won’t need to dig it up. That’s why ministers must reject the proposed opencast coal mine at Druridge Bay in Northumberland – currently subject to Public Inquiry – and lock coal in the ground.”
1. Government sets out plans to upgrade UK energy infrastructure and increase clean energy investment.
