Community Power Cornwall: Support Community Ownership of the Big Field Wind farm

take action

The Big Field Wind Farm could be the UK’s first community-owned windfarm to operate without government subsidy – but we need your help to make it happen.  The project development is being managed by renewable energy company Good Energy and comprises 11 wind turbines on a farmland site south of Bude in north Cornwall, together generating enough power for up to 22,000 homes.

Community Energy Cornwall

A decision on whether the Big Field Wind Farm can go ahead now rests with the UK Government – and that’s where we need your help to write a letter of support.

Community Power Cornwall (CPC) is working with Good Energy to enable the Big Field Wind Farm to be majority-owned by Cornwall, for Cornwall. CPC is a community-owned and community-led co-operative set up to deliver community energy projects in Cornwall.

Our current project portfolio includes two wind sites and four rooftop solar installations each generating revenue and/or energy bill savings for important community facilities.

But CPC’s ambition is to scale up the amount of locally-owned renewable generation so even more of the value of Cornwall’s own green energy resources is retained in Cornwall. That’s why we intend to purchase a majority stake in the Big Field Wind Farm of up to 74.9% using a mix of funding that will allow local investors including residents, community groups and other organisations.

The Big Field Wind Farm could power nearly a third of all the new homes planned for Cornwall by 2030.

Being locally owned and led ensures that more of the economic value generated by the Big Field Wind Farm is retained in Cornwall for local needs, and that the project delivers an even greater positive difference to local communities.

Help us make it happen by writing to Communities Secretary Sajid Javid, who will make the final decision. We’ve prepared an outline letter which you can send as it is, however if you do have the time then please use it as a guide and take a few minutes to set out the arguments in your own words.

Just follow the instructions on the letter writing page.
