An update from the Love your planet – Valentine’s renewables meeting

18th February 2017

Thanks to everyone who came to our special Valentine’s meeting on Tuesday.

We started with some chocolates and a couple of videos to get us in the mood, including a milky love story, a hot date night, and one that took “love your bike” a bit too literally!

We then heard from Anna about the work that Friends of the Earth is doing nationally on energy, from campaigning against fracking to lobbying for more support for renewables.  She also mentioned this climate slide deck, and this briefing on what the Government needs to do on climate change post-Paris.

Next we heard about some local clean energy projects, including Stockport Hydro, St John’s Sunshine and Greater Manchester Community Renewables.  If you’d like to find out more about community energy schemes in our area and show your support, check our the GM Community Energy Pledge website.

As well as supporting community energy, another way you can show your love for renewables is by switching to a green energy supplier.  Two of the best are Ecotricity and Good Energy – and if you switch using these links, they’ll make a £50 donation to Friends of the Earth!  🙂

Finally, we heard about 10:10’s Blown Away campaign, which is trying to persuade the Government to give more support to onshore wind and solar.  They recently commissioned an opinion poll which showed that more than 70% of people support wind and solar, but only 1 in 9 people think there’s that much support for renewables.

1010 Valentines Pinwheels

We did a Valentine-themed photo action to show our support for the campaign, and encouraged everyone to sign this petition and share it with their friends.  We also mentioned this online action, calling on the Government to rethink the proposed hike in business rates for schools and community groups that have installed their own solar panels.

Some of us then had a quick game of Trump Trumps, while the rest of us grabbed some marker pens to prepare the message for a second photo action about CETA, the EU-Canada trade deal which MEPs were about to vote on in the European Parliament.

The bad news is that MEPs voted 408 to 254 in favour of the deal on Wednesday, although we did manage to persuade our 3 North West Labour MEPs to vote against it.  All is not lost though, as the deal still needs to be ratified by all the EU member states.  Here’s an action calling on our Government to rethink the UK’s trade policy.

Have a great weekend, and don’t forget to book your place for next Saturday’s North West Gathering in Liverpool!
