Brexit technical papers – even at this advanced stage, lack of detail is major concern

news release

The government has published 25 technical notices today laying out preparation for the so-called Brexit ‘no-deal’ scenario, still considered the most damaging outcome.

The first of the documents from the Department for Exiting the European Union (DExEU) are intended to show how the public and business will cope with the no-deal scenario.

This first batch will involve areas central to environmental health, but Friends of the Earth says that the notices lack detail.

Kierra Box, Brexit campaign lead for Friends of the Earth, said:

“It’s the lack of detail, even at this incredibly advanced stage, about what will happen if we crash out without a deal. For example, there is the issue of tail-back queues at Dover. The minister can joke about sandwiches today, but would border checks on exit day mean that necessary food controls are suspended to minimise delays?

“At the very least, the damaging impact on air pollution resulting from miles of lorries is such an obvious problem. It cuts to the heart of the biggest concern in terms of a safe-guarded environment: the lack of the much-heralded watchdog. Any properly resourced and funded watchdog won’t be ready by March next year, and that alone threatens every promise the government has made about a green Brexit.”

It’s expected that all the notices, totalling 84, are due to be published before the end of September.
