Green Summit #2 Salford Quays

event report

The group was lucky enough to be offered a stall space in this year’s Green Summit held at the Lowry this year.

This year’s event saw a more than doubling of attendees with over 1700 people meeting together from across Greater Manchester to hear the latest on the region’s  plans to tackle Climate change and to work together to share ideas and inspiration on how this could be achieved.

GM Mayor Andy Burnham had been keen to ensure young voices were heard and was true to his word. The GM Youth Climate board were given the stage early in the day and with many primary school- aged children present it was great to speak to so many informed and passionate young people about their concerns for the future and what they were doing in their own communities.

Manchester Friends of the Earth had produced a ‘Green Summit’  magazine highlighting the main themes of Buildings, Energy, Food, Transport and Waste – providing a summary of where we felt Greater Manchester was up to, and suggestions for action. An electronic version of this is available on our website.

We had also worked with many Green Campaign groups across the region to produce a list of what we considered are the actions required with a timeline for the region to achieve carbon neutrality in 2038. A tall task with 15% reductions required each year from now- but possible with huge effort, funding and commitment.

This work obviously continues in all the campaigning we do and in particular with our association with Greater Manchester Climate Action Network (GM- CAN)
