Declare a Climate Emergency in Bolton. (Change.org)

take action

We are facing a climate breakdown.

Leading researchers and scientists have now warned that we have less than 11 years to take action to tackle climate change, otherwise we face the gravest threats to our local and global environment – this includes increased flooding, droughts, extreme weather events and millions of displaced people. We must act urgently.

In 2010 Bolton Council held a conference on climate change, since then there has been little action taken by the council to tackle the looming climate catastrophe.

On 8th October 2018, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released a report on the state of the climate. They warned that if the planet warmed by 1.5°C there would be some devastating consequences. Yet the consequences of allowing 2°C warming would be truly catastrophic.

Sir David Attenborough CBE, voice of BBC’s ‘Planet Earth’ who put it even more bleakly “If we don’t take action, the collapse of our civilisations and the extinction of much the natural world is on the horizon”.

Sign the Petition

This is a joint petition (e-petition and paper) and all the undersigned, call on Bolton Council for a debate at full council to:

  1. Declare a ‘Climate Emergency’. This is an internationally recognised term which has been used by authorities across the UK to acknowledge the impact of climate change.
  2. Pledge to make the borough of Bolton carbon neutral by 2030, considering all emissions.
  3. Work with local people and organisations to produce a zero-carbon plan that benefits out local community and shared environment.
  4. To commit to providing resources to address this emergency and develop appropriate and fit policies to tackle climate change.
  5. Call on the Government to provide the necessary policy changes and funding available.
  6. Produce an ethical procurement framework to ensure suppliers reduce their carbon footprint.
  7. Report to full council within 6 months with the actions the council will take to address this emergency.
