Six Acts to Reboot Democracy: Vote to ‘Introduce a Well-being of Future Generations Act’.

In the radical spirit of the 1819 Peterloo Reformers, the Six Acts to Reboot Democracy, is a digital brainstorm to crowd-source ideas which encourage us to completely rethink democracy.

Manchester Friends of the Earth have submitted a proposal for the Government to ‘Introduce a Well-being of Future Generations Act’. Drawing on the ground-breaking legislation introduced by the devolved Welsh Government the Act would:

  • make sustainable development the central organising principle of Government and public bodies in the UK and put sustainable development at the heart of government.
  • embed sustainable development in the Government’s governance procedures, financial planning, core business planning processes, change programmes and human resources processes.
  • ensure that global climate, environmental limits and resources are included and the UK only uses its fair share of resources and avoids adverse international impacts.
  • reflect and enhance the provisions within the Aarhus Convention on access to information, public participation and access to justice in environmental decision-making.
  • establish an independent Commissioner who should be a powerful champion for future generations, people in developing countries and those living in poverty.

The Six Acts poll will use an online voting platform where participants can submit their proposals for reform and vote for their favourite submissions. The poll will be open to anyone who is 16 or over and will be live from 17th August at 4pm.

To mark the occasion and to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Peterloo Massacre, the Peterloo Memorial Campaign and the Six Acts team will be throwing a public ‘ Illegal Picnic‘ launch party on the site of the massacre – Manchester Central forecourt, Windmill Street, M2 3GX on the 17th August, from 3 – 5:30pm.

The event will kick off with regional marchers and parades arriving at 3pm, followed by a shared picnic with live entertainment and a ‘Sedition Corner’ a democratic marketplace for trading ideas, votes and arguments over a range of radical ideas designed to reinvigorate democracy for the 21st century.
