Friends of the Earth reacts to NFU’s Achieving Net Zero report

news release

“It seems the NFU is still not prepared to contemplate significant land use change in Britain”

Reacting to the NFU’s report on achieving net zero emissions, Friends of the Earth campaigner Guy Shrubsole, said:

“Eating less but better meat is a crucial part of the fight against climate breakdown, yet astonishingly there is no mention of this in the NFU’s report. Doing so would free up much more land for trees and agroforestry, which would absorb huge quantities of carbon from the atmosphere. But it seems the NFU is still not prepared to contemplate significant land use change in Britain, despite the Committee on Climate Change recommending this as being vital.

“Intensive agriculture is a major factor in the decline of nature, and a big source of climate-wrecking emissions. The NFU has an opportunity to embrace a new approach to managing the land that benefits both farmers and the planet – something progressive farmers in the UK are starting to pioneer – but this report unfortunately falls short.”
