Greenwashing Team Ineos arrives in Greater Manchester on Stage 8 of the Tour of Britain as Friends of the Earth calls for ban on fracking

news release

“Cycling fans have shown time and time again how passionate they are about the environment and fighting climate breakdown. Ineos goes completely against this.” Ali Abbas, campaigner at Manchester Friends of the Earth.

As cycling fans from around the country watch the action of the Tour of Britain, Ineos (the big-money sponsor of one of the world’s top cycling teams) continues its efforts to drill for fossil fuels – in the UK. [2]

Ali Abbas, campaigner at Manchester Friends of the Earth, said: “Ineos only uses cycling, and other sports, in an effort to greenwash the terrible impact it has on our planet. The company produces millions of tonnes of plastic each year and is trying to drill and frack large swathes of the British countryside – all the while talking about the environmental virtues of cycling.

“Tobacco was banned from sports sponsorship due to the damaging health effects – this should also apply to fossil fuels which wreak havoc on the health of the planet.

“Ineos plans for fracking are completely incompatible with fighting climate breakdown. If we want to prevent further climate chaos they must not be allowed to dig up more fossil fuels.”

Friends of the Earth is calling on the Government to ban fracking.
