Call on the Government to introduce an “all-in” Deposit Return Scheme (Consultation Closed)
The Government is consulting on its plans to introduce a Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) in England. We welcome this plan as a way of increasing recycling rates and reducing plastic pollution, but we need to ensure it goes far enough and is introduced more quickly. As you might imagine, the full consultation paper is very detailed, and covers all aspects of the scheme. If you have time and would like to respond directly please see the consultation website and document.
For those with less time, we have prepared an email action that summarises our response. It calls on the DRS to be introduced as soon as possible, and to include as many items as possible.
Central to this issue is the broader concern of waste and resource use, and our response also calls on the Government to address these issues including the banning of incineration, and the export of our waste; as well as reducing the production of single-use plastics.
For more detail on Friends of the Earth’s view on the Deposit Return Scheme please see this blog post.
We would encourage you to let the Government know your views on the DRS by taking this online action. The consultation closes on Friday 4th June 2021.
Thank you, Amy, Cat and Seb
