Communities won’t take new shale gas wells sitting quietly

news release

Commenting on Energy Minister Michael Fallon’s assertion today (Wednesday 2 October 2013) that around 40 shale gas wells could be drilled in the next couple of years, Friends of the Earth’s Energy Campaigner Tony Bosworth said;  “From the ‘desolate’ north to the southern Tory heartlands, communities across the UK are unlikely to sit quietly by if the Government allows dozens of gas wells to be drilled in our countryside.

“With experts saying shale gas won’t lead to cheaper fuel bills and scientists warning about the climate impact of fossil fuels, this is not the solution to Britain’s energy challenges.

“If we want to fix our broken energy system, the Government must slash energy waste and give investors the confidence they need to develop our home-grown renewable power potential.”
