On Wednesday 26th May, an historic climate case brought against Shell by Friends of the Earth Netherlands (Milieudefensie), along with 17,000 co-plaintiffs and six other organisations, will come to judgement at a Dutch court in The Hague.

The fossil fuel giant, one of the world’s biggest polluters, is being challenged over its climate wrecking practices. In the face of the climate crisis, Shell continues to drill for oil and gas, pumping out twice as much CO₂ as the Netherlands.

If successful, this case would be the first legal judgement ordering a polluting transnational corporation to reduce its emissions in line with global climate goals. The impacts on climate policy and corporate accountability worldwide will be hugely significant.

Friends of the Earth Netherlands is demanding that Shell’s global business operations must emit 45% less CO₂ by 2030. By continuing to extract fossil fuels, Shell undermines global efforts to avert climate catastrophe.
