Election Survey 2023 – Summary by Question

13. If elected, will you support the introduction of an ‘ethical advertising policy’ on Council-controlled sites?

April Preston

"Important to mention that the digital screens that Mcc installed across the city not only pushed for unethical firms that were pushing crypto, proven to be scams but used up public space: taking away mindful engagement around the city and dangerously impacting those who require mobility aids. Welcome this as part of FOEs brief as Mcc needs to be brought to task on these big funders who cause its’ local residents undue harm for profit. "

"I think council's should be careful which products, companies and services they have advertised in public. I think we should have a balance in things that are advertised, for example, 1 advert advertising a high sugar/fat product for every 10 adverts. People shouldn't just be subjected to having to be show products deemed to be healthy every 5 minutes. I think people should be able to make their own minds up on the adverts that they see and if they want that certain products, let them buy it and if not, they don't have to. I feel that it adds to the stigma of being looked down on for choosing a burger over a salad at times. I often see adverts I do not agree with but bamning adverts for example to do with food demed to be junk feels like nanny state tactics and as a Liberal, I think people should be able to live their lives however they want to as long as it isn't affecting anyone else. "I agree with this with a caveat regarding junk food advertising. If the policy is to prohibit junk food advertising in favour of campaigns which support healthier options, care needs to be taken over how this is done to ensure inclusivity, particularly for those who may live with disordered eating. Food and body shaming is around us everyday and as someone who lives with disordered eating, advertising can have a real impact on this."

"I do not believe in demonising perfectly legitimate companies like airlines or car manufacturers. We have a long way to go before people will be persuaded to give up using air travel, there is simply no choice as we live on an island and for long haul flights etc. Airlines & vehicle manufacturers are doing their best to comply with carbon reducing initiatives; trying to take away their right to advertise & to be competitive is wrong. They are subject to ever more stringent carbon reducing features, which they need customers to pay for. There is already a source of discontent at being told what not to eat in the way of sugar, salt etc. The level of obesity is concerning, and I believe that more ways should be found to ensure that everyone can afford to access fresh foods and not rely on 'junk' food, but again, I do not believe in banning advertising for legitimate products that on their own do not harm people. Education and early learning is the best weapon there is , and most people grow up to understand moderation in all things is the key. We must not throw the baby out with the bathwater. "
